How is this different from repeating after a model?

Repeating turns an existing sentence into sound. This makes you build the sentence itself — which is where most real conversations actually stall.

Is a different wording counted as wrong?

No. Any wording that gets the meaning across counts. The point is producing a sentence that works, not hitting one prescribed answer.
